March
This is the last month to prune your elm trees, as April 1 is the deadline according to the City of Calgary's bylaw. If you haven't started thinking about your landscaping needs for the up-coming season, it's time you give us a call, as we book up very fast.

April
Spring has finally sprung and we can get back into those shrub and perennial beds. It is time to assess the winter damage, clean up leaves and cut back spent perennials. Remember some plants take longer to bud out then others, so don't get to anxious to pull anything up. Hardy shrub roses for example can be very pokey to bud. Be patient!

May
Now is the time to start fertilizing to promote new and healthy growth throughout the season. Well watered and fertilized lawns and gardens are more insect and disease resistant and will have the optimum chance at surviving our harsh and unpredictable winters.

June
Remember that the proper time to prune shrubs that flower on old wood, such as lilacs is immediately after they bloom. This is done because these shrubs set the next years flower buds soon after they are finished flowering. Late pruning will result in sparse flowers the following year.

July
Now is the time to prune your birch and maple trees. Contact us for a free estimate. It is very important that newly planted trees and shrubs get enough water throughout the hot days of summer.

August
By the 15th of this month your monthly fertilizing schedule should be completed. It is time to allow plant material to harden off and prepare for winter, however it is still vital to maintain a watering routine until freeze up.

September
Last month to prune your birch and maple trees. Remember to pick up your spring flowering bulbs. Spring flowering bulbs are planted from September until November providing the soil is not frozen.

October
This is the first month you can prune your Elm trees according to City of Calgary By-Laws. Elm trees need to be dormant when they are pruned to help prevent the spreading of the Dutch Elm Disease. October is the month to start watering your plant material in for the winter, and this should be done just before freeze up.

November
This month Fiddler's Green Landscaping starts winter pruning rates. Give our office a call and see what discounts you qualify for. Also ask us about our winter hard landscaping services.

December
Planning a new garden or adding to an existing landscape, it is always satisfying to have plant material that provides interest throughout our long winters. Red, yellow and Siberian coral dogwoods have distinctive bark that brightens any winter landscape. Also for added color the Bar Harbor and Blue Chip juniper that turns a plum or mauve color in winter will be a welcome addition.
